Colleen led the discussion about whether to tour Frick or Phipps Conservatory.  Members voted and it was decided to forego a tour and instead have a lunch where there is more time to socialize. The date is November 18, 2017 at noon at Kretzler’s Restaurant.  The group decided to have a white elephant gift exchange. If a member chooses to participate bring an item about $5 to $10.  More details will be given at the October meeting.
  • Dessert and arrangement — Thank you to Bill Goff for dessert and Linda and Denny Brown for the arrangement.

Program:  “What To Do With That Orchid You Just Bought” by Nancy Klein
  • Jenna introduced Nancy Klein who is a regular Phipps Conservatory volunteer, member of the

  •
  • Orchid Society of Western Pennsylvania (OSWP), and an avid orchid grower who now has ~150 orchids at home down from a high of ~300. She gave a fun, informative talk and re-potted Lynn Betts’ orchid she brought in for a new home. Dianne Machesney was the lucky winner.
  • Enjoy orchids as they are long blooming, many are quite inexpensive, and can “jump into your cart,” per Nancy’s experience.
  • Almost all orchids like a temperature drop of 15 degrees every day for blooming.
  • You can move orchids outside during the summer but keep in bright shade and definitely avoid sunshine as orchids are understory plants.
  • Select easier orchids such as a Phalaenopsis, Oncidium or Dendrobium. Practice on them before you begin buying expensive and difficult orchids, e.g. Lady Slippers.
  • Mark on a plastic tag when last re-potted into a one-half inch larger pot, usually about every 1 ½ - 3 years. Knock out the old planting medium. Spray roots with 3% hydrogen peroxide solution. Replace the potting medium (bark good) and poke the medium firmly down. If moss used, water far less to prevent root rot.
  • Water every week or two. Submerge in water, keeping the crown dry, for about 10 minutes. Drain well. If using a second pot, air space between pots is a must. Fertilize lightly with a slow release fertilizer. Can use 1 or 2 ice cubes for watering.
  • If needed for pest control, spray a mix of 4 oz 409, 4 oz rubbing alcohol and water to make a 32 oz solution.
