Program: “The Truth about Ferns: Sex, Lies, Betrayal, Bad Attitude and a Gone Gay Generation” by Len Lehman

Colleen Fingal introduced speaker Len Lehman former college and high school teacher, member of Men’s Garden Society of Pittsburgh and almost every plant society. Len gave an enthusiastic talk with slides, handout, and four different fern spores (found on the underside of fronds) for hands-on planting.

Take home points:

·        Coal is fossilized ferns and one can often see the frond outline within the coal.
·        Ferns are a transitional form from Devonian period and don’t have true roots. Growing within water the easiest as temperature nearly constant, gravity isn’t as much a factor as on land, and the nutrients come to the plant.
·        Ferns in Victorian bouquets ‘said’ I will protect you.
·        Most fern care includes non-chlorinated water, bright light if in water, sparingly applied fertilizer 1/100.
·        Ferns can be 2” tall to over 12 feet tall, some remain colored all year.
·        Grow native ferns such as maidenhair ferns (Adiatum) for beautiful texture.
·        Reread “Where the Red Fern Grows.”

Calendar

·        October 25 – “Why Don’t My Hydrangeas Bloom?” by Sandy Csikari.
